|
Water hyacinth is a water plant with lots of roots, which can easily grow in ponds, rivers, and lakes or swamp. The color of their flowers is purple, and it multiplies with a "stolon" root system (roots that grow upwards become new plants). The plant is actually a parasite and can grow in both dry & wet seasons.
In tropical countries, like Indonesia, water hyacinth grows easily in the wild, especially in the wet season. It grows rapidly, sometimes completely covering the surfaces of ponds, rivers, lakes or swamp. It can also contribute to water pollution.
It the past, because it was thought the plant was environmentally unfriendly and had no commercial value, people tried to eradicate it. They always failed, however, because of the plant's ability to grow and spread so fast. Recently the Water Hyacinth is perceived as being very valuable since it can be made into many beautiful kinds of handicrafts and furniture. As a plant it is now much sought after and its value has increased. This has benefited the farmers who can now sell the plant's raw materials as a new kind of crop. Farmers are now even cultivating it to meet the demands of the market.
MENDONG
People have known Mendong for long time. In Indonesia, Mendong has many different local names. In West Sumatra people call it "Mansiang Mancik", in East Kalimantan (Banjarmasin) it is known as "Purun Tikus", in North Sulawesi (Manado) it is called "daun tikar" which translates as "floor leaves", in South Sulawesi they call it "Tiohu" but in Java people call it " Mendong" and this is its best known name.
Farmers plant Mendong in fields that have an ample water supply and a good irrigation system. It is cultivated especially for the handicraft industry as handicrafts have a higher commercial value than staples such as rice. Mendong was originally found only in South East Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Burma, Philippines), but now can be found in most of Asia's countries including China, India and others.
Mendong has long been part of Indonesian traditional life for centuries. It has been used for generations to make floor mats and sleeping mats. In Indonesia people often prefer to sit on the floor rather than on chairs. Mendong provides the perfect floor covering solution as it does for work mats and all manner of coverings.
The product has to be woven and many different weaving techniques have been developed over the years according to the use of the end products.
Typical handicraft products made from Mendong include bags, baskets, boxes, floor mats, etc.
SCREW PINE ( Pandan )
Pandanus is a tree or standard growing bush. Its branches sometimes have thick air growing roots that make a canopy. The legulate leaf is often long, green in color and either serrated or plain. They form in the branches a little like pineapple trees, and are fibrous. A fruit stone with a single seed will grow in moist area.
The Pandanus has been cultivated by farmers all around Java, Bali, and other Islands in Indonesia, for use in the handicraft industry. We can make many kinds of products by weaving Pandanus leaves. They are a soft and flexible material and can be adapted to many uses. Pandanus also can absorb colors very well and can be dyed ton almost every shade. We have found darker colors to have better results.
